South Crete vs North Crete: Which Is Better for Your Holiday?

If you’re planning a trip to Crete, one of the biggest questions is:

Should you stay in South Crete or North Crete?

The island is large, diverse and surprisingly different depending on which coast you choose. While both regions offer beautiful beaches and rich history, the experience can feel completely different.

That said, choosing between South and North Crete is not a life-altering decision. Rethymno is easily reached from the south coast, and scenic day trips to Chania or Agios Nikolaos can effortlessly enrich your stay. Wherever you base yourself, much of the island remains within reach.

Here’s how to decide which part of Crete is right for your holiday.

1️⃣ Atmosphere: Lively vs Laid-Back

North Crete

  • Larger towns like Chania, Rethymno and Heraklion

  • More hotels and resorts

  • Bustling promenades

  • More nightlife and organized beaches

South Crete

  • Smaller villages like Plakias and Agia Galini

  • Fewer large hotels

  • Quieter beaches

  • Slower pace of life

If you enjoy vibrant evenings and easy access to shops and bars, North Crete may suit you.

If you prefer space, nature and calm surroundings, South Crete offers a more peaceful experience.

2️⃣ Beaches: Organized vs Natural

North Coast Beaches

  • More beach bars

  • Sunbeds and umbrellas

  • Easier access

  • Popular and sometimes crowded in summer

South Coast Beaches

  • Wilder landscapes

  • Dramatic cliffs

  • Fewer large beach clubs

  • More secluded coves

  • Even beaches with taverns feel laid-back and local

South Crete beaches often feel less commercial — but offer something for every taste.

3️⃣ Wind & Weather

North Crete faces the Aegean Sea and can experience strong summer winds.

South Crete faces the Libyan Sea. Certain areas — especially open bays framed by valleys — can also experience powerful winds during peak summer. However, the varied coastline means conditions can change significantly within a short drive, and sheltered coves are usually available nearby.

In general:

  • South Crete feels warmer and drier.

  • North Crete feels slightly more humid.

  • Both coasts experience seasonal wind patterns.

4️⃣ Accessibility: Airports, Driving & the New Kastelli Airport

North Crete is home to the island’s main airports:

  • Heraklion International Airport (Nikos Kazantzakis)

  • Chania International Airport

Staying on the north coast can mean shorter transfer times and more immediate access to towns and resorts.

South Crete typically requires:

  • A scenic 1–2 hour drive from the airport

  • A rental car (recommended)

For many visitors, that drive through mountains, olive groves and dramatic landscapes becomes part of the holiday experience — a gradual transition from travel mode to true relaxation.

What About the New Kastelli Airport?

The new Kastelli Airport (Heraklion New International Airport) — currently under development — will replace Heraklion Airport in the coming years.

For South Crete, this is particularly relevant.

Because Kastelli is located slightly inland and further south than the current airport, transfer times to central and eastern parts of South Crete are can become shorter and more convenient once it opens, depending on further infrastructural decisions and developments.

While North Crete will remain highly accessible, the new airport may gradually make South Crete even easier to reach for international travelers — without changing its relaxed and spacious character.

5️⃣ Accommoda-tion Style

North Crete

  • Large resorts

  • All-inclusive hotels

  • City boutique hotels

South Crete

  • Private villas

  • Small boutique accommodations

  • Family-run guesthouses

If privacy and space matter to you, the south offers great villa-focused options — a defining feature of many villa holidays in Crete, where landscape and accommodation style are closely connected.

6️⃣ Who Should Choose Which?

Choose North Crete if you:

  • Want more nightlife options and busy towns

  • Prefer walking everywhere

  • Like organized beaches

  • Are visiting without a car

Choose South Crete if you:

  • Prefer quiet beaches

  • Enjoy nature and hiking

  • Value privacy

  • Want a slower, more authentic atmosphere

  • Are planning a villa holiday

The Honest Truth

Choosing between South and North Crete is less about right or wrong and more about the atmosphere you want to wake up to each morning. The island is wonderfully accessible, and scenic drives make exploring both coasts part of the adventure. Choosing one side does not mean missing out on the other — it simply means deciding where your holiday rhythm begins.

North Crete is more developed and convenient.

South Crete is more spacious and intimate.

Neither is “better” — but they offer distinctly different experiences.

If your ideal holiday includes:

  • Sea views

  • Local tavernas

  • Uncrowded beaches

  • Time to truly unwind

South Crete may be exactly what you’re looking for.
