Kourtaliotiko Gorge & Preveli Beach: The Most Photogenic Day Trip
Gorgeous Gorges in South Crete
If you are staying in Plakias or Asomatos, some of South Crete’s most dramatic landscapes are not a day trip — they are just around the corner.
Within minutes, you can be standing above one of Crete’s most powerful gorges, listening to the wind rushing through the cliffs of Kourtaliotiko Gorge, or swimming beneath palm trees at the legendary Preveli Beach.
This is the South Crete many visitors see on Instagram.
But when you stay nearby, you experience it differently.
Kourtaliotiko Gorge: Where Wind, Water & Stone Collide
Driving north from Asomatos (or south from Koxare), the road suddenly narrows. The cliffs rise vertically on both sides. The air changes. You are entering Kourtaliotiko Gorge.
The name comes from the sound of the wind — “kourtala” — which whistles dramatically through the rock formations. On certain days, you can literally hear the gorge rattling.
The Hidden Waterfall
Many visitors stop only at the roadside viewpoints. But the real magic lies below.
A stone staircase leads down to a river oasis where freshwater springs emerge directly from the rock. The small waterfall and emerald pools are wildly photogenic — especially in spring and early summer when the water flow is strongest.
Yes, it is Instagrammable.
But it is also peaceful in the early morning — especially if you are staying nearby and don’t need to arrive with tour buses.
Insider tip:
Go before 9am or after 5pm in high season. Midday can get crowded.
Preveli Beach: Palm Forest & Libyan Sea
Continue through the gorge and you reach one of Crete’s most iconic beaches: Preveli Beach.
Unlike most Cretan beaches, Preveli offers something unusual — a river that flows into the sea.
On one side: the Libyan Sea.
On the other: a palm forest lining a freshwater river.
You can:
Swim in saltwater
Walk into cool river water
Explore shaded palm groves
Paddle upstream into the canyon
It feels almost tropical — yet completely Cretan.
How to Access Preveli Beach (Parking Tips)
There are two main ways to reach Preveli Beach, and choosing the right one can shape your experience.
1. Official Cliff-Top Parking (Most Popular)
The main organized parking area sits above the beach on the western side. From here, a well-maintained but steep path leads down to the river and sea.
The descent takes around 15 minutes and offers breathtaking panoramic views over the Libyan Sea and the palm forest below — one of the most photographed viewpoints in South Crete.
Be prepared for the return climb, especially during midday heat. Comfortable shoes and water are recommended.
2. Eastern Access (Less Climbing)
A second access point lies further east. From here, you approach the beach by crossing a shallow creek (the bridge is broken, so beware of wet feet) and walking more gradually toward the river mouth.
There is significantly less climbing involved, making it a preferred option for visitors who want to avoid the steep ascent back up.
Both routes lead to the same extraordinary setting — but the experience differs slightly.
Why It’s Ideal for Guests Staying in the South
This is where location matters.
If you stay in Chania or Heraklion, visiting Kourtaliotiko and Preveli means planning a full-day excursion.
If you stay in Asomatos, or another spot on the south coast?
You are minutes away.
You can:
Visit early before crowds arrive
Return for lunch at your villa
Go back for sunset
Or combine it with dinner in Plakias
That flexibility changes the experience completely.
